Saudi Arabia Completes Major Road Upgrades in Mecca for 2026 Hajj Season

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Municipalities and Housing has just completed one of the biggest road and infrastructure upgrades Mecca has seen in years. The entire project was done specifically to prepare for the 2026 Hajj season. The main goal is to make movement easier, safer, and less stressful for the millions of pilgrims who will be arriving in the holy city over the coming weeks. It is a huge logistical effort that shows how seriously Saudi Arabia takes its responsibility as the host of Hajj every year.

Over 11 Million Metres of Roads Covered

The numbers behind this project are very impressive. The ministry completed works covering more than 11 million linear metres of roads across Mecca and the holy sites. On top of that, around 74 million square metres of road surfaces were maintained and improved. More than 1.2 million square metres of brand new asphalt was also laid down to strengthen the roads and make sure they can handle the massive volume of pilgrim traffic expected during Hajj days.

123 Bridges and 44 Tunnels Fully Prepared

The operational plan also included getting 123 bridges and 44 pedestrian and vehicle tunnels fully ready for the season. These are some of the busiest and most important points along the pilgrim movement routes in and around the holy sites. Keeping them in top condition is critical for avoiding dangerous crowding and long delays. Infrastructure improvements were also made along all the main traffic routes connecting the key areas pilgrims visit during Hajj.

Over 860,000 Pilgrims Already in Saudi Arabia

More than 860,000 foreign pilgrims have already arrived in Saudi Arabia for Hajj 2026 with millions more still coming. Saudi authorities have deployed 22,000 staff members and prepared 88,000 waste management units across all holy sites. A total of 3.1 million seats across 12,000 flights have been arranged to move pilgrims safely throughout the entire season without disruption.
