FAB and Citi Advance Tokenized Deposit Payments Through Swift’s Blockchain Ledger

First Abu Dhabi Bank has just made history. FAB has become the first bank in the Middle East and Africa to complete a live tokenized deposit transaction through Swift’s new blockchain-based ledger system. The transaction was done in partnership with Citi and marks a significant step in how banks could move money across borders in the future faster, cheaper, and around the clock.
What Actually Happened?
FAB and Citi completed a real, live USD transaction using tokenized deposits through SSWIFT’sLedger Minimum Viable Product, which is the early working version of the new system. This was not a test on paper. Real money moved. The transaction proved that Swift’s existing messaging system, tokenized bank deposits, and blockchain infrastructure can all work together in one seamless flow. It also proved this can be done bilaterally between two banks in different countries without needing to overhaul the entire existing financial system. FAB is the first bank in the entire Middle East and Africa region to hit this milestone. No other bank in the region has done it yet. If you are an FAB customer and want to stay on top of your account details and balance as the bank rolls out new digital services, take a moment to do a quick FAB Balance Check Online so you always know where your account stands without visiting a branch.
What Is a Tokenized Deposit?
This is the part that confuses most people, so here is the simple version. A tokenized deposit is a digital version of money that already exists in your bank account. It is not a cryptocurrency, and it is not created out of thin air. If you have AED 10,000 in your FAB account, a tokenized version of that deposit is a digital token that represents exactly that AED 10,000. The token lives on a blockchain ledger and can be transferred between banks almost instantly, any time of day, including weekends and public holidays. The actual money stays on FAB’s balance sheet the whole time. The token is just the mechanism that allows the transfer to happen faster and more efficiently than traditional banking wires. Traditional cross-border bank transfers can take one to three business days and only happen during banking hours. Tokenized deposits can potentially settle in seconds, at any hour, on any day of the week.
Why Does This Matter for the UAE?
The UAE is one of the world’s biggest hubs for cross-border business and trade. Companies based in Dubai and Abu Dhabi move billions of dollars internationally every single day, paying suppliers, receiving payments from customers, and transferring funds between subsidiaries in different countries. Right now, every one of those transfers involves delays, cut-off times, and fees. A system built on tokenized deposits and blockchain settlement could reduce those delays significantly and make international payments as simple as sending a text message. FAB has total assets of AED 1.41 trillion, which is around USD 384 billion. It operates across more than 20 global markets. When a bank of that size completes a live transaction on a new payment technology, the industry pays attention. Other banks will look at what FAB and Citi did and start asking whether they need to be doing the same thing. How Does the SWIFT Ledger Fit In?
Swift is the organization that runs the global messaging network that banks already use to communicate with each other for international transfers. Almost every bank in the world is connected to SWIFT. The SWIFT Ledger is a new layer on top of that existing network. Instead of replacing what already works, it adds blockchain-based settlement capabilities to the system banks already trust. The Swift Ledger acts as a coordination layer. It records payment commitments and interbank liabilities on a distributed ledger, which is a type of blockchain database. It does not take custody of any funds. The actual settlement between banks still happens through the traditional correspondent banking channels that have existed for decades. What changes is the speed and efficiency of how that coordination happens. The interbank settlement stays safe, the existing risk management frameworks stay in place, and the liquidity controls that banks rely on are not disrupted. FAB will continue working with Swift and other banks on future phases, including expanded interoperability and programmable treasury solutions for large corporate clients.
What Comes Next for FAB?
FAB said it will keep working with Swift and other participating banks on the next stages of the initiative. These include expanding the number of banks that can interoperate on the system, building out 24/7 cross-border settlement capabilities, and developing programmable treasury products for institutional and corporate clients. A programmable treasury product is one where payment instructions can be embedded into the transaction itself—for example, automatically paying a supplier the moment goods are confirmed as delivered, without anyone having to manually authorize the transfer. That level of automation could save businesses significant time and reduce the risk of payment errors in large-scale commercial operations. FAB is rated Aa3 by Moody’s, AA- by S&P, and AA- by Fitch. It holds an MSCI ESG rating of AA and ranks first among MENA banks for ESG scores. This tokenized deposit milestone is the kind of move that reinforces why FAB is regarded as one of the most forward-thinking banks in the region. Unknown callers sometimes try to impersonate bank representatives, particularly around announcements of new bank technologies or digital services. If you receive a call from an unfamiliar number claiming to be from FAB or any other bank, always verify before engaging.
