A mother from Ras Al Khaimah is speaking out about beach safety after she lost her young son in a drowning incident back in 2018. As summer arrives and more families head to the beach, she wants other parents to be more careful near the water.
Her Story and Her Message
Um Marwan, a Ras Al Khaimah resident, lost her young son in a water-related incident in 2018. Since then, she has been calling for stronger safety awareness at public beaches. She believes clear guidance and visible safety signs can save lives, especially during busy summer months when children are most active near the water.
She also pointed out that even careful parents can struggle to keep an eye on their children at all times. Water conditions can change fast, and children often move toward deeper areas without realising the danger.
What Authorities Are Saying
UAE civil defence officials say most drowning cases happen due to reasons that can be prevented. These include leaving children without supervision, swimming in areas that are not guarded, going too far from the shore, and waiting too long to call for help.
Officials advise families to always watch their children closely, follow all safety signs at the beach, keep life jackets and float devices nearby, and call for help right away if someone is in trouble.
Parents Share Their Concerns
Other parents in Ras Al Khaimah also shared their views. Shaikha Ahmed Al Shehhi said that children can be curious and unpredictable near water, which makes constant supervision very important. She also called for more first aid training for parents and caregivers.
Another parent, Mona Hassan Abdullah Bin Al Shaiba, said that managing multiple children at a beach is not easy. She stressed the need for more lifeguards, clearer swimming zones, and better safety signs at public beaches.
