The United Arab Emirates has once again demonstrated the strength and precision of its national defence capabilities. Over the past 48 hours, UAE air defence systems successfully detected and intercepted six hostile drones that were targeting civilian and vital areas across the country. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that all threats were neutralised with complete efficiency, resulting in no human casualties and no damage to critical infrastructure.
Drones Traced Back to Iraqi Territory
This latest development comes in the wake of the May 17, 2026 drone attack on the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in Abu Dhabi — one of the most significant security incidents the region has seen in recent times. During that attack, two of the three drones were intercepted mid-air, while a third managed to strike an electricity generator located outside the plant’s inner perimeter. Investigations and technical monitoring have now confirmed that all six drones — including those involved in the Barakah incident — originated from Iraqi territory.
UAE Asserts Right to Protect National Security
The UAE Ministry of Defence has firmly stated that the country reserves its full right to take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty under international law. The Armed Forces remain on high alert and fully prepared to confront any future threats against the nation’s security and vital assets. Residents across key urban areas, including those living in Dubai Marina, have been assured that civilian zones remain safe and fully protected.
UAE Raises the Issue at the UN Security Council
On the diplomatic front, the UAE called on the UN Security Council to condemn this dangerous escalation in the strongest possible terms. UAE Permanent Representative Mohamed Abushahab addressed the world body, stressing that even the absence of catastrophic consequences does not reduce the gravity of attacking a peaceful nuclear facility — a clear violation of international law and the UN Charter.
Iran-Backed Militias Under Regional Spotlight
The drone campaign is widely believed to be connected to Iran-backed militias operating under Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF). Saudi Arabia also reported intercepting three drones that entered its airspace from Iraq around the same period.
